How To Get Easy Grants for Small Businesses from the Government
Filed Under Utah Business | Leave a Comment
Gregg Hall asked:
Several states have small business government grants. These are not offered by the federal government but a number of state-run development agencies provide free government grants. The states that offer these are Kansas, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Utah. Other states provide financing through loans with incentives to those who want to start a small business rather than free government grants.
Instead of money the government will give free advice and training to those who want to make their business grow. The United States Government’s Small Business Administration (SBA) is where the free government grants originate from. Since fifty percent of the labor force comes from the twenty five million small businesses in the United States and that contributes more than half contributes to more than half of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), there isn’t much question why the government is interested in the quandary of the small businessman.
The free government grants come with free counseling, training, and technical assistance. The Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) have full and part time staff that will get help from the private sector to give the business whatever help that they need. This help usually comes in the form of consultants, engineers, and testing laboratories. The grants offered can be found in the Catalog for Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) website http://www.sfda.gov under the “Small Business” and “Small Business Person” beneficiary category. You can browse this free government grants for small business at CFDA free of charge.
The SBA has no funds of its own actually available to supply to small businesses. They depend on the private sector such as banks, credit unions, coops, etc. to provide loans then they guarantee the loans. These loan programs are Loan Guaranty Programs, SBA LowDoc Loans, SBA Express Loans, and Microloan Programs. Targeted Loan Programs are also offered such as defense-delta loans, CAIP loans, Pollution control loans, and Export Express Loans. These loans are meant to target or meet specific needs. Since these places are all ready aware of the SBA you only need to mention SBA for the banks etc. to know immediately what to do.
While free government grants could of course be very useful to any business. The help that a business receives need not be money to be useful. The advice that a business receives can be just as invaluable. The professional service could be worth more than money itself. As the old line says “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for life.” The success of these businesses can only be beneficial to the government in the long run so the advice given is definitely the best.

Business Credit: a Financial Boost Toward Your Business Dream
Filed Under Utah Business | Leave a Comment
Pat Gage asked:
Would you buy that equipment your business desperately needs?
Would you hire that assistant so you wouldn’t have to work 70+ hours a week and on weekends?
Would you pay off some bills? Taxes perhaps?
Would you launch an advertising campaign to bring in more customers or clients?
Would you buy residential or commercial property?
Is the lack of small business credit holding you back from growing your business or perhaps the thought of even starting a new business?
What would you do with an extra 30, 50, $100,000 in your bank account right now or the availability of a line of credit?
While you may think this is an impossible dream, the reality of having a business credit line may be much closer than you think. The key to having this kind of extra money ready to spend for your business is in knowing the secrets to be able to acquire business credit.
Securing business credit can seem daunting when you are first starting on this path, but with a few small steps, and a little patience, you will be able to secure the credit you need to get your business where you would like it to be.
The first thing you need to do is make sure your business has it’s own credit. Often when people start businesses, they don’t realize the business credit is tied to their personal credit.
It’s time to do a credit check on your business. Pull your business’ Dun & Bradstreet Credit Profile and see what it says. Don’t have a D&B Credit Profile? This is not going to help your business establish it’s own credit.
As you build credit for business, you will suddenly find a new world is open to you. Instead of having to take out complete loans for each purchase you want to make, you will instead be able to secure a business line of credit. This means you will have money, ready to go, when you need it, but don’t have to use it (or pay interest on it) until that time comes. This is the way large businesses work, why shouldn’t you be using their business credit line tricks?
While you may be thinking you can get the same thing by having a personal credit card, you’d be wrong. Unlike a personal credit card, a business line of credit, whether through a bank, or credit card company (such as the Open American Express card), will be giving perks for being a business account. Some of those perks can include convenience checks. Sure, you’ve seen those with your personal credit card, but when you use ’cash advance checks’ with your card, it will cost a fortune. Business accounts often come with ‘convenience checks’ that do not come with the same penalty fees and charges for usage.
While these two tips may seem relatively simple and basic, establishing your own business credit, and a business line of credit can help you take major strides towards starting or growing your dream business.

Buying a Home in Utah County
Filed Under Utah Business | Leave a Comment
Art Gib asked:
When shopping for a home in Utah County, there are several things that every buyer ought to consider before they make an offer on a lot or a home. Two of the most important factors to review are the home’s location and its price.
Your home’s location is so important because it will have an impact on the whole family and their quality of life. For example, where you live will determine the length of your commute to work, which school systems your children can attend, the amount of neighborhood safety you enjoy, your proximity to local entertainment, and the atmosphere that surrounds your children as they grow.
With rising gas prices, more and more people are looking for houses close to their place of employment. For example, since Brigham Young University is one of the largest employers in the state, real estate in the Provo and Orem areas are very crowded and expensive. An empty acre lot acre can cost you more than $300,000 if you are looking in the central and eastern neighborhoods.
One way to stay close to the shopping centers, educational facilities, and employment opportunities around Orem and Provo and get more home for your money is to look for land or real estate west of I-15 in the northern part of Utah County. This also puts your family closer to the attractions like Thanksgiving point and Salt Lake City. In addition to their location, North Utah County residential lots tend to be more open and more affordable than residential lots in more developed areas. For example, rather than paying $300,000 just for the land to build on, you could buy a completely new home on a lot for that price.
If you look for a home in a planned neighborhood, there might also be local amenities like basket ball courts, swimming pools, a community running trail, tennis courts and picnic areas. This means the whole family can enjoy the summer without traveling more than a couple minutes from home. Even though real estate west of I-15 is newer than the established neighborhoods in the Wasatch Front, Thousands of families have already jumped on the opportunity for a beautiful and affordable home in these new neighborhoods. This means neighbors and commercial businesses are already waiting to greet newcomers to the area.
As far as price is concerned, every buyer will obviously have a unique budget it would be wise to be conservative in what you think you can afford. You may get approved for a very expensive home, but you should try to make your payments equal one third or one half of your total income and no more. That way you can meet other bills and save for family emergencies.
