Employers are restricted on the information they can give on an employee. The telephone number is not something that can be given.
NO personal information regarding where you live nor how to contact you can be given by an employer.
No that is not legal!!!
Generally, an employer is only allowed to give out verification of employment and dates of employment, nothing else, unless there is a request from a law enforcement agency or Subpoena.
If it was a business related reason why they gave out the phone number, I don’t think it’s ilegal. Many times someone needs to reach me urgently, and the people at the office will some times give them my home phone number.
If it was because your friend was very cute, and someone wanted her phone number to ask her on a date, then yeah. The company is being unprofessional.
No, it wasn’t legal. They should have asked her if she wants them to give this info to whomever, but to just give them it was not legal. She should contact her EEO (Human Recourse)about this. If she gets into some kind of trouble because they did this, she could have some legal recourse and can sue them for damages.
